Hot and Humid Texan Night in San Antonio, Driving on Highway 281 I was wondering about my expectations on the show i was about to watch, I have never seen this band before I discovered it almost by accident on those random Youtube playlist no longer that 5 weeks ago, then I made a post on facebook about this band named The Chamanas; 2 days later on the events section of it, i realized that they were coming to town, suddenly i was distracted by the engine of a Boeing 737 about to land; the Airport Runway is traversal to HWY 281.
I arrived to Paper Tiger on North St Marys, the opener band had already finished their set, the technicians were soundchecking and taking care of the last details, the audience was diverse; different ethnicities were ready to watch the show, the ambient music stops, lights turn off then The Chamanas were on the Stage, they started the set with a slow beat then this was increasing at the time the musicians were revealing their personalities and musical skills capturing our attention, it was like a small community trance, all of us were enchanted by the voice and presence of the band frontLady, owning with massive sense lyrics, powerful voice and mystic dance moves while the 3 guys were showcasing their musical creativity and 70’s bolero music influences, for me: being a kid with a photographic memory in the late 70’s was easy to identify the influence of the music my parents used to hear with their friends at gatherings and party, maybe this music is kind of new for the new generations, for me on the other hand was an open invitation to introspection to find my childhood bubble of memories through a contemporary and exquisite approach.
I was more than happy photographing this Band, magnificently surprised to hear this young musicians executing masterfully their instruments, I was capturing images of the band from different angles playing with composition rules and challenging me to create images with an accentuated lack of illumination, the band, audience and I were from one point to another on the musical pentagram, then another thru the beat and lyrics (yes, i do enjoy songs with clever lyrics). here You have some of the photos i captured on the 3/24/17 night in San Antonio, Texas.
